Venezuelans gather on 30th anniversary of Hugo Chavez's coup attempt

CARACAS, VENEZUELA - FEBRAURY 6: Thousands of Venezuelans gathered on Sunday, Feb. 6, to mark the 1992 coup attempt by Hugo Chavez. Protesters carried banners, flags, and pictures of Chavez, who led an attempt to overthrow the government of Carlos Andres Perez in 1992. The incumbent president of the country Nicolas Maduro also addressed the crowd of protesters in the capital Caracas. Following the failed coup attempt, Chavez was imprisoned without a court ruling until 1994. As Chavez’s popularity grew day by day, charges against him dropped and he founded the political party Movement of the Fifth Republic (Movimiento de la Quinta República; MVR). In December 1998 he won the presidential election with 56 percent of the vote, and he took office in February 1999. Maduro succeeded Hugo Chavez as president of Venezuela in 2013. Recent years saw a number of protests after Maduro was sworn in for a second term as president following a vote boycotted by the opposition. Tensions flared when opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself acting president on Jan. 23 -- a move supported by the U.S. and many European and Latin American countries.
