The famous place is conceived as an open space shared by everyone independently of sexual orientation, to promote social integration. It is built in the ruins of a former hotel. It is located in the Marta Abreu street close to the main Catholic Cathedral in the city. Since its opening in 1985, the place was embraced and welcomed by the Cuban LGBT community which, at the time, had little space to socially interact.
