Benaki Museum of Islamic Art houses more than 12 thousand artworks in Greece

ATHENS, GREECE - JULY 10, 2023: The Benaki Museum of Islamic Art in Greece houses more than 12 thousand artworks and offers a comprehensive understanding of Islamic art. The museum, located in the capital city Athens, displays a rich collection gathered from a wide geographic range, including India, Iran, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, North Africa, Sicily, and Spain. Many Islamic artifacts have been showcased in the museum such as ceramics, goldsmithing, weaving, wood carving, glasswork, and mother-of-pearl inlay and these crafts showcase the exquisite artistry and craftsmanship of Islamic artists throughout history. The works in the museum are from the private collection of Antonis Benekais of Alexandria. On Monday, 10, Mina Moraitou, the Director of the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art stated “It’s a very important museum because it reflects the art of societies which not far from Greece but differ greatly from Greek culture."
