Great Ethiopian Run kicks off 25th edition in Addis Ababa

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA - NOV. 23: The 25th Great Ethiopian Run marathon, considered the most widely attended race in Africa, drew approximately 40,000 people to Meskel Square in the capital Addis Ababa on Sunday, Nov. 23.The Great Ethiopian Run was officially founded in 2001 by Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie, a multiple record-breaker and Olympic winner, following his return from the Sydney Olympics.The event has grown to become the largest race in Africa and serves as a symbol of Ethiopia's athletic heritage, aiming to broaden participation beyond elite athletes to unite the nation.(Footage by Daniel Terefe/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
