Rio de Janeiro: Supporters of Lula celebrate victory against Bolsonaro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - NOVEMBER 6: Supporters of Brazil's President Elect Luis Inácio Lula da Silva held a party on Sunday, Nov. 6, to celebrate the victory against incumbent Jair Bolsonaro The crowd held an out-of-season carnival at Copacabana Beach, south of the city. On Sunday night last week, Lula beat far-right Bolsonaro in a tight race, garnering 50.9% of the vote compared with Bolsonaro’s 49.1%, according to Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court. Truckers supporting Bolsonaro blocked roads across the country after he lost the elections. Long lines of vehicles formed as the trucks partially or completely closed the highways, with intercity bus travel especially hit. Some of the truckers who started the protests demanded military intervention to prevent Lula from taking office. Following roadblocks across the country by his supporters who did not want to concede defeat, Bolsonaro lashed out at the left in the country, insisting "the current popular movements are the result of indignation and a feeling of injustice at how the electoral process took place." He said, “peaceful demonstrations are always welcome, but our methods cannot be those of the left, that always harmed the population" listed the invasion of property and destruction of Brazil's heritage as some of the consequences. The far-right politician remained silent about his loss Sunday, not making a declaration regarding Lula’s victory while several close allies have acknowledged defeat.
