From ‘Next, it’s your turn' to 'The doctor fled': Daraa youth mark Assad regime's end
DARAA, SYRIA - MAY 18: In the southern city of Daraa, where Syria's 2011 uprising first ignited, locals are once again inscribing revolutionary messages on walls, echoing the spirit that launched a nationwide revolt 14 years ago.Graffiti bearing slogans such as “The story is over. The dictator fled, and the revolution won” have appeared across the city, directly challenging the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad.One of the earliest messages, “It’s your turn, doctor (Bashar al-Assad),” scrawled on a school wall, marked the beginning of the Syrian revolution.Despite the devastation left by over a decade of war, Syrians continue to express resistance through these writings.Footage from Daraa shows a city still scarred by years of conflict and bombardment by regime forces, yet resilient in its calls for freedom and justice. In February 2011, young people from Daraa were the ones who ignited the spark of the nearly 14-year-long popular revolution when they wrote “It's your turn, doctor (Bashar al-Assad)” on their school walls.Bashar Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963.(Footage by Bakr Al Kasem /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
