Frelinghuysen floor remarks on second 2017 disaster aid bill

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen of New Jersey opens debate on legislation that would provide $36.5 billion to areas devastated by hurricanes in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in addition to deadly wildfires in the West. Frelinghuysen credits first responders, volunteers and states who saved countless lives, protected communities and demonstrated the best inhumanity, including the federal emergency management agency, Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Defense, Coast Guard and other agencies. Frelinghuysen says the second installment would address urgent short-term priorities by replenishing the FEMA disaster relief fund, billions for community disaster loans for basic municipal services such as police and fire protection and public education, and emergency disaster nutrition program benefits to Puerto Rico that states have, saying the federal support will not be all that is needed over the long term.
