(Original Caption) With the completion of the 5,936th plane, production of Douglas Dauntless (SBD) dive bombers ceased on July 21, 1944, thus forecasting the close of one of the most sensational combat records ever established by one type of warplane. Highlighted by the Battle of Midway, when SBDs sank four Jap carriers, the record stretches from the Pearl Harbor attack to the present shattering blows of Task Force 58.
