Marielitos departed from Cuban's Mariel Harbor after Fidel Castro announced that anyone who wanted to leave Cuba could do so. This occurred as a result of a sharp downturn in the Cuban economy, leading to internal tensions on the island. The United States later found out that a great number of the refugees had come from jails and mental health facilities, thus increasing crime, especially in Miami.
