STAR-CORPORATE PHILANTHROPY-26/10/04-Susan Collins works on running a protien gel in a brand new fourth floor lab at McMaster University. Story is about corporate philanthropy on the rise but the money is often being targetted by the donor. Michael de Groote, retired founder of Laidlaw Transport, North America's largest bus and waste haulage company, donated $100 million - the largest single donation ever in Canada - to the McMaster Medical Centre. $41 million went to capital expenditurres for learning and discovery. A new building has been built for this purpose. Only the top two floors are open. They are open concept labs on both sidesof a main aisle. Many young researchers have been hired.
