Kiyomori Sees the Skulls of his Enemies

At the end of his life, the Taira tyrant, Kiyomori, had a series of hallucinations. In the most vivid he saw the skulls of the enemies that he had had killed grinning at him in a snowy garden at his palace in Fukuhara. The hallucinations grew increasingly severe, and Kiyomori died in fevered agony. His painful death was regarded as fitting reward for his pride and cruelty. | Located in: Private Collection, USA.
