In Florence, Italy, the Arno River is crossed by the medieval stone closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge known as the Ponte Vecchio. It is renowned for the businesses constructed along it; historically, it was customary practice to construct shops on such bridges. The shops were originally occupied by butchers, tanners, and farmers; currently, jewelers, art dealers, and souvenir vendors call them home. The Ponte Santa Trinita and the Ponte alle Grazie are the two nearby bridges to the Ponte Vecchio. Via de'Guicciardini and via Por Santa Maria are connected by the bridge. The regional capital of Tuscany is Florence, a city in Central Italy.
