MITOSIS or Cell Division in a Plant--PROPHASE and METAPHASE, Onion (Allium) Root Tip, 500X. The chromosomes (black), spindle and spindle fibers are visible in the Metaphase cell (left). The chromosomes and nuclear membrane are visible in the Prophase cell (right upper). Stains used: Hematoxylin (stains chromosomes), Feulgen (stains the cytoplasm and cell wall reddish-purple. The onion root tip is an excellent place to find cell division since it is a part of the plant (apical meristem) that has a very high multiplication of cells by cell division.
