The place was the former headquarters of the Batista police in the city. During the Battle for Santa Clara, the place was taken by the troops of 'Roberto Rodriguez Fernandez' whose nickname was 'El Vaquerito'. He died in the action. There are two awards plaques below naming the school as a 'Collective of Heroic Tradition'
