International Crew Thatches Roof At World Heritage Shirakawa-go

Video footage taken on May 19 shows an international group of workers thatching a traditional steep-roofed house in the Shirakawa-go district in Gifu Prefecture. About 200 artisans from Japan and six other countries joined a workshop of the International Thatching Society, laying and beating nearly 20 tons of straw into place to create the roof. Shirakawa-go, known for its “gassho-zukuri” thatched-roof houses, is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
