A court hearing regarding the assassination attempt of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the failed July 15 coup bid started Monday in Turkey's southwestern Mugla province. The hearing, which is being held in Mugla Chamber of Commerce and Industry's conference hall due to the number of suspects (44), started amid widened security measures. The "assassination team" of Erdogan are also among the suspects, who has been jailed and pending for the trial. A small crowd protested the suspects as they were being brought in to the court hearing area. During the July 15 night, two police officers were also martyred at the scene of Erdogan's residing hotel in port town Marmaris. On July 15, Erdogan told the nation on live television amid an ongoing coup attempt that he had narrowly escaped an attack on his life when the hotel in Marmaris where he was staying was bombed only 15 minutes after he left. FETO, led by U.S.-based Fethullah Gulen, has been accused of orchestrating the failed coup attempt of July 2016. The defeated coup left at least 248 people martyred, and around 2,200 others wounded.
