Hamas marks 34-year anniversary with Gaza City rally

GAZA, PALESTINE - DECEMBER 10: Thousands of people in the Gaza Strip on Friday (Dec. 10) participated in two marches called by the Islamic Resistance Movement "Hamas", to celebrate the 34th anniversary of its founding. The first march took place west of Gaza City, and the second took place in Jabalia camp, in the northern Gaza Strip. The marchers carried Palestinian flags and banners of the movement, led by a number of leaders of Hamas and the Palestinian factions. Hamas was founded on Dec. 14, 1987, by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin -- who was assassinated by Israel seven years later -- and leaders of Palestine's Muslim Brotherhood, of which Hamas is considered an ideological offshoot. The movement's launch coincided with the outbreak of the events of the first Palestinian intifada, known as the "Intifada of Stones", on December 9, 1987. Mahmoud al-Zahar, a member of the movement's political bureau, said that his movement is making every effort to release Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons. Hamas keeps four Israelis, including two soldiers who were captured during the war on Gaza in the summer of 2014 (without disclosing their fate or health status), and the other two who entered the Strip in unclear circumstances during the past years. Israel holds 4,650 prisoners in its prisons, according to data from the Palestinian Prisoners Society. Al-Zahar said in his speech during the rally in West of Gaza city that “We say to Britain and America those who considered the Islamic movement (Hamas) as a terrorist: they use more than one measure in support of the occupation (Israel) while claiming democracy and practicing terrorism in word. We are a national Islamic liberation movement whose duty is to liberate its land and protect its people and its holy sites." (Footage by Montaser Alsawaf/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
