Terry Jones, speaking in 1983, on seeing recurring themes and meanings in Monty Python work and that happening in The Meaning of Life: "...when we set out to write, we don't actually intend to put meaning or themes in the thing...So many of the scenes are about people trying to pretend that the awfulness of life isn't happening. Like in, for instance, the scene in the restaurant, this guy is vomiting all over the place and the waiter is trying to carry on and be very polite and everything, give him the menu and all the other guests are trying to carry on as normal and the same things happen in lots of other scenes in the film."
