"HODA KOTB, co-host: Well, the last time Olivia visited with us, she drank all of our wine, and this time we're filling her glass with beer. OLIVIA MUNN, co-host: Because you didn't drink it yourself, lightweight. KOTB: But this was actually a present that we brought for Olivia, it's a wine rack. It's Kathie Lee's actually, but--anyway, you can use it today. MUNN: We wear the same size. KOTB: That's right. We're... MUNN: And I just realized I'm now going to be on "The Soup," aren't I? KOTB: Yes, you are. All right, that's your part right there. MUNN: It's actually called "Talk Soup." KOTB: Yeah. OK. MUNN: Oh, when my name is on, I have to read. KOTB: Yes. MUNN: So Hayley Jensen is the beer sommelier from DBGB and she's showing us how to pair beer with some traditional Irish dishes. And I got to say, you guys get paid for this? Because you just drink and eat. KOTB: Yes, we do. MUNN: Awesome. KOTB: Hayley, I like the--I like this segment because you're trying to--people don't know what goes with what often, so let's talk about it. Ms. HAYLEY JENSEN (Beer Sommelier, DBGB): Exactly. So this is an Irish banger, perfect for today. KOTB: Yeah. Ms. JENSEN: It's with some roasted potatoes and some cabbage as well, really traditional. KOTB: Yeah. Yeah. Ms. JENSEN: But I chose to go the non-traditional route with the pairing, it's a wheat Saison. KOTB: Yeah. Ms. JENSEN: By Stillwater. It's called Cellar Door. So please take a sip. KOTB: OK. TEXT: St. Patrick's Day Beer Pairing Cellar Door $10.99 per 22oz bottle MUNN: You don't have to say "please." Ms. JENSEN: And it's really nice because it's actually brewed with sage, so it enhances the sausage, gives it a really spicy flavor. KOTB: I like those kind of ales. MUNN: Oh, that's delicious. KOTB: That is nice. Ms. JENSEN: Yeah. Really flavorful. (Unintelligible) MUNN: That is like a breakfast drink. KOTB: Why are you reading cards? Ms. JENSEN: Yeah, right? KOTB: Come on. MUNN: (Unintelligible) Ms. JENSEN: And over here we have our Irish stew. KOTB: OK. Ms. JENSEN: It's kind of our take on it, it's a braised flatiron with some Irish soda bread croutons and root vegetables. KOTB: Mm-hmm. Ms. JENSEN: And rather than pair it with a traditional port or a stout, I thought it would be nice to do a black lager, which is a little lighter, lower in alcohol. KOTB: Is this like... Ms. JENSEN: Less filling. KOTB: This isn't like a Guinness at all, it just looks dark. TEXT: St. Patrick's Day Beer Pairing Kostritzher Black Lager $4.99 per 16oz bottle Ms. JENSEN: It's dark in color but very light in body... KOTB: Careful. Ms. JENSEN: ...and in alcohol. KOTB: Mm-hmm. Ms. JENSEN: So take a big sip. You can drink as much as you want. KOTB: Do you like that? MUNN: I will. I will. KOTB: Do you want to try the food with it? No. MUNN: That would take away from the buzz, I don't--hello! Ms. JENSEN: Works together--works together quite nicely actually. MUNN: Are you new? KOTB: All right, what do we have here? Ms. JENSEN: And this one here is our boudin basque. It's basically like an Irish black pudding or blood sausage, so a little more exotic. KOTB: Mm-hmm. Ms. JENSEN: We make ours a little spicy, which is why we pair it with Ommegang BPA. TEXT: St. Patrick's Day Beer Pairing Ommegang Belgian Pale Ale $7.99 per 25oz bottle Ms. JENSEN: So this is a hoppy pale ale. KOTB: Hoppy pale. Mm-hmm. Ms. JENSEN: Which really cools down the palate when you're eating spicy food. KOTB: Mm-hmm. OK. Ms. JENSEN: So I think it works really well together. MUNN: I grew up on Hamburger Helper, which goes best with that? Ms. JENSEN: I think--I think this one. This is the...(unintelligible)...for Hamburger Helper as well. KOTB: Mm. What do you think? MUNN: The Cheeseburger Helper one is really good. KOTB: OK. Ms. JENSEN: Yeah, together it really cools down your palate for the... KOTB: OK. Ms. JENSEN: And this is my favorite, dessert. KOTB: Dessert. Me, too. Ms. JENSEN: It's an Irish coffee tart. So you've got your Bailey's, you've got your... KOTB: I'm going to have to try the sweet thing. Do you want some sweet... Ms. JENSEN: You have a whiskey cream there. KOTB: No? Ms. JENSEN: And it's with chocolate caramel ice cream. TEXT: St. Patrick's Day Beer Pairing Left Hand Milk Stout $10.99 per 6-pack Ms. JENSEN: And I'm serving it--this beer actually I made, it's Doc Coffee Stout. So I think it goes very well with... MUNN: This thing keeps dripping. KOTB: Here, do you want a bite? MUNN: You go first. KOTB: OK. MUNN: I--sometimes, like, desserts are, like, way--like really sweet... KOTB: Mm. That's so good. MUNN: ...like... Ms. JENSEN: That's why this beer--I brewed it with coffee so you--it'll really kind of... KOTB: Mm-hmm. Ms. JENSEN: ...give it that earthy note to keep it from being too sweet. KOTB: Mm. Ms. JENSEN: And for something nationally available I really like Left Hand Milk Stout. KOTB: All right. Thank you so, so much. I'm going to take one more bite of this. We really appreciate it. MUNN: You need to start drinking with us. KOTB: Yeah, Sara, get involved. Ms. JENSEN: Try the home brew. KOTB: Olivia, it's been quite the experience with you. MUNN: Are we done? KOTB: We're done, that's the whole show. MUNN: Oh. KOTB: You did do what you promised you'd do. MUNN: So I drank my way through it.
