ITN Reporting 66: De Gaulle attempts devaluation of the pound; Servan-Schreiber interview SOT - Yes, De Gaulle would like to see the pound devalued and even better the dollar devalued / He'd like the price of gold lifted up which would mean devaluation of the dollar / De Gaulle does not want the world to be ruled by the Anglo Saxons / he thinks the last war left and equilibrium between East and West which he likes, except that France did not play a sufficient role in it and since then the equlibrium has been constantly changing in favour of America / The main poliitical thesis of De Gaulle is that Europe and France should fight this new imperialism - American imperialism / Roosevelt had no great consideration for France / He thought France was a colonial power & he wanted to fight against our colonialism / This certainly marked De Gaulle's assessment of America / De Gaulle is not a sentimental man - he is a great historian / We should never underestimate him / I do not agree with his political views burt he is a superb historian & his view of America is an interesting one, it's not a stupid one
