Truckers spend as much as 67 per cent of their time on the road trying to maximize their earnings, and average 4000 INR (72 USD) a month. At the Transport Nagar there are over 2500 trucks parked at any moment, and approximately five million truck drivers and helpers travel the 66,000 km of national highways in India. One third of truckers report commercial sex and truckers are an estimated 10-12 per cent of clients of sex workers. HIV prevalence among long-distance truckers ranges from three to seven per cent, and one to seven per cent have at least one sexually transmitted disease (STD). NGO's like Child Survival India work with truckers to educate them on safe sex practices, condom use, and offer clinics for STD treatments.
