The Indian Ocean archipelago of Comoros faces political instability after President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi extended his term, delaying the handover of power under the country's rotating presidency. Sambi last year gained an extension to his term -- due to expire on May 26 -- through a constitutional referendum aimed to harmonise presidential polls with those of the leaders of the three isles making up the Union of Comoros. Sambi, from the island of Anjouan, was to hand over to a candidate from Moheli at the end of his presidency.
