Daily Life In Eritrea 2022
ASMARA, ERITREA - DECEMBER 28: A woman crosses the street in front of the Fiat Tagliero Building in the city center on December 28, 2022 in Asmara, Eritrea. Completed in 1938, the Fiat Tagliero Building is a Futurist-style structure designed by the Italian engineer Giuseppe Pettazzi that served as a centrally located service station in Asmara, Eritrea. The 15 meter "wings" of the structure are constructed of reinforced concrete and are what make the structure an architectural wonder and a prominent historical landmark in Asmara. Asmara was originally constructed as the capitol city of what was formerly the Italian colony Eritrea between 1890 and 1940. Prior to that, Eritrea's history extends back to the 3rd and 4th century A.D. when the region was a part of the Axumite kingdom. After Italian occupation ended during World War II, Asmara fell under British administration from 1941 - 1952 before coming under Ethiopian administration. From 1952 to 1991 Asmara was under Ethiopia until Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia following a thirty year war that began in September of 1961 and ended on May 29, 1991. Simmering hostilities continued which resulted in a border war between the two countries in 1998. Following two years of war the governments of Eritrea and Ethiopia entered into a peace agreement that was signed on 12 December 2000 at Algiers, Algeria known as the Algiers Agreement that formally end the 2 year Eritrean–Ethiopian War border war fought between 1998 to 2000. The two countries entered into a relationship of greater cooperation in 2016 when the current prime minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed and President of Eritrea Isaias Afwerki brokered an arrangement that ended what were otherwise cool relations between the two countries. Currently Asmara is home to a reported 963,000 inhabitants of Ethiopian orthodox christian, Islamic faith, catholic and protestant faiths. (Photo by J. Countess/Getty Images)
