Ugandan Asian Refugees

A Ugandan Asian woman reads a letter from her husband, who is not being allowed to join her in the UK, to a group of other separated wives at the British reception centre in West Malling, Kent, 26th September 1973. The women are some of the 27,000 Ugandan Asians to arrive in Britain after their expulsion by Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin in 1972. A year later, 250 families are still separated. A report, released by the Coordinating Committee For The Welfare Of Evacuees from Uganda on 26th September 1973, described decisions made by the UK immigration authorities as 'harsh and arbitrary'.
