This photo taken on December 1, 2023 shows 31-year old Mr Kim, 31, who in May loaded his family into a home-made wooden boat and sailed away from his native North Korea, attends a job fair for North Korean defectors in Seoul while holding a whiteboard that reads "Navigator". Defecting by sea is extremely rare and seen as far more dangerous than land routes, with only a handful of people making it across the de facto maritime border, the Northern Limit line. But Kim, a 31-year-old fisherman, was confident he could pull it off -- and, after two failed attempts, he finally managed to get his family of nine to South Korea in May this year.
