King, president of King Soopers, hold a double armful of squirming cats and puppies beside the Christmas tree at the league's main offices, 1295 S. Santa Fe Drive. The occasion was the annual King Soopers Christmas party for homeless pets. Gifts brought to Tuesday's party by King included food, cat litter, toys and tick powder, all necessary in caring for the 1,000-2,300 cats and a like number of dogs abandoned monthly. Mrs. Malo said mostof the ending for the strays isn't happy. Only about 8 or 9 percent of cats are adopted, about 20 percent of the dogs. King Soopers has sponsored parties for the homeless animals for the past 12 years, a league spokesman reported. Credit: Denver Post (Denver Post via Getty Images)
