As security continues to improve, Iraqis feel more comfortable traveling via the Baghdad-Basra overnight train which passes through both Shiite and Sunni cities across Iraq. The Iraqi General Railway Company had to halt the service in 2006 when bombings and kidnappings spread in most of the areas the train passed through. The Journey from Baghdad-Basra takes 12 hours in the diesel-powered German 1984 train and costs around $ 7 US dollars a seat and $ 17 US dollars for a bed, compared to around $ 22 US dollars a seat in a public minivan.
