In the American Civil War (1861–1865), there was very heavy fighting near Richmond, Virginia, between June 26 and July 2, 1862. Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved to cut off Union general McClellan from his base at White House Landing. The Union forces fell back to Gaines's Mill and after heavy fighting, the Confederates won the battle there on June 27.
