Don Budge Playing a Backhand Shot

(Original Caption) During Garden tournament opener, tennis star Don Budge displays backhand form that made him top man in the sport some years back. But it wasn't quite enough when the 38-year-old Budge faced little Pancho Segura as the Jack Kramer touring tournament got underway. The Ecuador ace downed Budge 6-4, 6-2, knocking the glory out of the old master's return to the professional tennis circuit. A crowd of some 4,500, no doubt came to see Budge flash his famous form, was instead cheering the bandy-legged South American's amazing returns by the end of the match.
