JUBA, SUDAN: Children belonging to Mundari displaced ethnic group, wait for the water supply in September 1986 in a UNHCR refugee camp outside Juba, the capital of the east bank of the Nile in Equatoria province of southern Sudan. In September 1986, between 20,000 and 40,000 nomads moved into the suburbs of the city of Juba, assisted by the humanitarian organizations, fleeing the fighting between the Khartoum government Muslim forces and the rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). Sudan's civil war, which began in 1983, is set against a background of resistance by the mainly Animist and Christian south to the Arab-Muslim Islamic regime in Khartoum.
