Defense Enters Pleas In Marathon NSU Trial

MUNICH, GERMANY - JUNE 05: (EDITORS NOTE: Parts of this image have been obscured for legal reasons.) (1st row L-R) Anja Sturm, Wolgang Stahl, Hermann Borchert and Mathias Grasel, lawyers of main defendant Beate Zschaepe (2nd R), and co-defendants Ralf Wohlleben (2nd row C), Andre E. (2nd row L), Carsten S. (3rd row R) and Holger G. (3rd row L) wait for the trial on terror charges in connection with the neo-Nazi NSU group at the Oberlandesgericht courthouse on June 5, 2018 in Munich, Germany. Defense lawyers entered their pleas today in the marathon trial, which is now into its sixth year, in what seems to be the final phases of the trial. Zschaepe and four co-defendants are charged in their roles in supporting neo-Nazis Uwe Boenhardt and Uwe Mundlos, who embarked on a murder spree of nine immigrants and one policewoman between 2000 and 2007. The case is among the most embarrassing and scandalous in modern German police history, as investigators failed to connect the murders within a neo-Nazi context until both men died following a botched bank robbery in 2011.
