Historical illustration of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (German: Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald, Varusschlacht, or Hermannsschlacht) - a major battle between Germanic tribes and the Roman Empire that took place somewhere near modern Kalkriese from September 8 - 11, 9 AD. Three Roman legions, including auxiliary troops and baggage trains under Publius Quinctilius Varus in Germania, suffered a devastating defeat against a Germanic army led by Arminius (“Hermann”), a prince of the Cherusci. The battle, in which one eighth of the entire army of the Roman Empire was destroyed, marked the end of Roman efforts to make the areas of Germania on the right bank of the Rhine up to the Elbe (Fluvius Albis) a province of the Roman Empire (Augustan Germanic Wars).
