The Großer Tiergarten is a park in central Berlin (west of the Brandenburg Gate), located in the district to which it gave its name, in the borough of Mitte. It is the second largest green space in the city in terms of area (210 hectares) and the oldest. Former hunting reserve, the Großer Tiergarten was converted into a pleasure park by Frederick the Great in the 18th century. Despite these developments, it has retained its wild aspect, alternating lawns, small ponds and long wooded areas. The Landwehr canal is located in the south west area of the park.
