The Altiplano or Andean Plateau , in west-central South America, lies mainly within Bolivian territory while a small northern parts in Peru and southern parts in Chile and Argentina. The Altiplano is an area of inland drainage of the central Andes with an average height of about 3,750 meters .The Altiplano is dominated by massive active volcanoes of the Central Volcanic Zone to the west, and the Cordillera Real in the north east while the Atacama Desert, lies to the southwest of the Altiplano and to the east lies the humid Amazon rainforest.This intense vulcanic and geothermal activity is the mainly responseble of the actual landscape of the whole Altiplano, that is really incredible. The Altiplano is rich of colored lakes , tall vulcanos and extended salt flat. Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon) is a shallow salt lake in the southwest of the altiplano of Bolivia, within Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve and close to the border with Chile. The lake contains borax islands, whose white color contrasts with the reddish color of its waters, which is caused by red sediments and pigmentation of some algae. The Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus) is one of the rarest flamingos in the world. It lives in the Andes mountains of South America. It is closely related to James's flamingo, and the two make up the genus Phoenicoparrus. The Chilean flamingo, Andean flamingo and James's flamingo are all sympatric, and all live in colonies.
