In this image the OSTEOCYTES (Bone cells) are see in the reddish matrix and are in a space in the matrix called a lacuna (white space surrounding the osteocyte. The OSTEOBLASTS (Bone-forming cells) are very abundant on the surfaces of the bony matrix. The osteoblasts produce bone and may eventually become surrounded by matrix in a lacuna (little cavity).
