SPONGY or CANCELLOUS BONE--OSTEOBLASTS (bone-forming cells), OSTEOCYTES (bone cells), and MATRIX, 100X. The Matrix is the pink tissue that functions in structural support. The OSTEOCYTES are the numerous cells in the matrix that are surrounded by a thin, clear space, the LACUNA. The OSTEOBLASTS are the numerous dark-staining cells that are lining the large clear spaces in the spongy bone. Many are immediately adjacent to the matrix and can become surrounded by the matrix that they produce thus becoming osteocytes.
