In 9 AD, Roman-educated Arminius (Arminius being the latinized version of Hermann), a member of the tribe of the Cherusci, turned against his former Roman allies and led an alliance of Germanic tribes to defeat three legions under Varus. These three legions were completely destroyed.
This monument was constructed between 1838 and 1875, in a time of rising nationalism and unity in Germany.
