- Four weeks ago we published our first analysis on the Conservative party's tax and spending plans / in just a few hours they were in disarray on their plans for a marriage tax allowance / David Cameron and George Osborne appears totally confused about what their policies were, let alone what they would cost / Conservative tax and spending plans came unstuck at the first application of pressure / they have not done the work needed to prepare for government / hardly surprising from a Conservative leader who says, on taxation, I've always said the message is more important than the money / he doesn't understand that the opposite is the case for the public / today we want to shine a light on another area, one that represents an imminent threat to recovery, their plan to take billions of pounds out of the economy this year / Conservative plans for the economy are far from clear / we're seeing the early signs of economic recovery, the road ahead will be bumpy, we cannot take risks, the economy needs continued support until the recovery is fully locked in / we're leaving government spending and investment in place for 2010 to 11 / David Cameron keeps feeding us the home spun comparisons between the governments budget and family budgets, it sounds good as a soundbite, as a piece of economic analysis it is illiterate / managing a household budget is not the same as managing the public finances prudently / at a time of low private sector activity, government spending provides vital demand / pull that out of the economy and you will push up spending on unemployment, reduce the tax take and make the deficit worse / this...
