Moors Murders Trial: First Day

Moors Murders Trial: First Day; ENGLAND: Cheshire: Chester: Chester Assizes (Chester Castle): EXT Tom St John Barry (Reporter to camera ) SOF - Fantastic security precautions have been taken and the precincts of the court have been very widely defined. Before you can get into the court you have to produce no less than three passes if you are a mere journalist. When you get in, you find yourself in a long, very high room, about 25 feet high, wood panelled for about twelve feet, and then light stone arches. Above that a wooden roof with a stained glass light in itjpacked benches, the dock semi-circular with a shield of halfinch thick plate glass behind it, between the dock and the public gallery. The morning started with a courteous little mediaeval pagean of the reading of the Queen's Commission of Assize. There was much bowing and rolling of sonorous phases and the Judge, Mr. Justice Fenton Atkinson, wearing his full bottomed wig, took his seat when his name was reached in the Commission of Assize. Immediately afterwards he left the court, and while he was out the two accused were put up in the dock. Brady wearing a light grey suit and a blue tie, Hindley wearing a sort of grey pepper-and-salt costume and a light blue open-necked shirt. Mr. Justice Fenton Atkinson came back wearing a short bobbed wig and the trial began. The whole morning was taken up with legal argumente at the end of which the Judge ruled that the trial would proceed on the original indictment and that no seperate trial, for the two accused, would be allowed.
