HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA -- SUNDAY, DEC. 4, 2016: Tanner Mester shows his scar where he was stabbed in the chest by Eric Lund in a drunken encounter as he was walking home from a bar along Adams Ave. in Huntington Beach in 2011. To Mester's surprise, Lund was permitted, as part of a plea deal, an option Mester didn't even know existed -- for $100 a night, pay to stay a smaller city jail instead of the overcrowded dingy Orange County jail. Lund paid $36,500 to serve his year-long sentence in Seal Beach jail for aggravated assault. Mester, who had served time in state prison for drug offenses as a younger man, was trying to turn his life around at the time, with a newborn child and a budding plumbing business.
