On the Set of Zabana!

ORAN AREA, ALGERIA - MAY 13: May 13, 2011, Oran area, Algeria. On the set of Zabana!, a movie by Algerian director Said Ould-Khelifa, produced by Yacine Laloui. The costume designer is re-adjusting the uniform jacket of an actor playing the role of a French policeman. Ahmed Zabana, best known as Zabana, was an Algerian freedom fighter who participated in the assassination of a forest ranger named Francois Braun during the night of October 31st to November 1st, 1954. Following this event and the outbreak of the Algerian war of liberation in the region of Oran on November 1st, 1954, he was sentenced to death and guillotined. The execution took place on June 19th, 1956, in the Barberousse prison of Algiers. He is now regarded as a national hero; his hometown and a few places in Oran are named after him.
